Unlike the Kentucky Derby, where there’s a buzz around the event no matter what the circumstances are, the excitement for the Belmont depends on the outcome of the first two races. If there’s not a horse that has won the first two legs at Churchill Downs and Pimlico, the atmosphere simply isn’t the same at Belmont Park.
The last two horses to come in with a chance to win the Triple Crown have delivered the goods with Justify last year and American Pharoah in 2015. When American Pharoah won, he was the first two accomplish the feat since Affirmed in 1978. This race is 1/4 a mile longer than the Derby and 5/16 of a mile further than that of the Preakness. The odds on favorite to win the race is Tacitus, who is listed at 7/4 (+175). Tacitus finished 3rd at the Kentucky Derby, but did not run at the Preakness Stakes.
Without a doubt the biggest threat to Tacitus is War of Will, whose odds are just slightly worse at 5/2 (+250). After finishing 7th at the Kentucky Derby, War of Will went on to win the Preakness Stakes.
No other horse in the field has odds better than 8 to 1, which is where you find both Everfast and Master Fencer. There’s another small gap until you find Intrepid Heart and Sir Winston at 12/1. That leaves Spinoff at 16/1, with Joevia and Tax sharing the worst odds to win at 20/1.
