The lightly raced Wasp is in danger of being overlooked in this stakes contest, presumably because her latest win in allowance company didn’t come in a particularly fast time. However, the figure she earned when runner-up the time before is enough to make her competitive in this field and she still has plenty of upside with just four starts under her belt.
An expensive daughter of American Pharoah, it’s also worth noting that she had a pretty wide trip on the way to that win last time, and it came on a sloppy track, as three out of her four starts have been so far. She is open to any amount of progression and could well take her form to another level once she manages to get back on dry terrain, something she’s only encountered once when a narrow second on debut.
As stakes races go, this isn’t a deep one for the level, and it will be disappointing if this well-bred filly isn’t capable of a lot more than she’s already shown. With Javier Castellano doing the steering, hopefully Wasp can put a sting in the tail of her rivals.
Regular readers of this column will know I’m a big fan of trainer Mark Glatt, who I believe is consistently underrated on the California circuit. His record with maidens and younger horses in particular tends to stand up to the closest scrutiny, and he can further enhance that record with second-time starter Pray For My Owner.
Where Glatt tends to excel with his younger horses is once they have that initial bit of experience under their belts. A trainer who rarely has his debutants fully cranked, it’s at the second time of asking when they tend to do their best work. With that in mind, it’s encouraging that our selection was able to run as well as she did when finishing third on debut at Del Mar in November.
After flashing plenty of early speed, Pray For My Owner understandably tried a bit late on but still ran a promising race. She’s presumably had a little niggle or two since that first run, having not been seen since, though her last couple of works suggest she’s back on the right track now.
Glatt also adds Lasix into the mix, too, which could well move her up a little further. It’s very surprising to her put in at 10/1 here, a price that is simply much too big.
